Who I am.

My name is Robert Benson. I am Director of Library Services at Roane State Community College. I am a husband, a father, an avid reader, an aspiring runner and a major music addict. I am also deeply fascinated by the ways in which new information technologies are changing our daily lives.

I fell in love with the idea of technology rather late. I wasn’t one of this kids who loved computers. I found them rather tedious. Understand this was the age of Commodore 64 and Texas Instruments. In retrospect, that was magical stuff. From where I stand today, I see that computing alone has majorly impacted human endeavor — we put people on the moon, we are decoding the human genome, we can more or less predict the local weather. That’s a big deal, but this blog isn’t about that stuff. I am more interested in the everyday experiences made possible because we carry computers around with us — smart phones, iPods, tablet computers, wearable technology and the like. We communicate our lives through social networks and divulge intimate details in ways we would have thought insane just a few years ago. I’m talking about the internet of stuff.

We are living in profound times. Expectations and possibilities are changing all around us. The change is happening so fast we can see it happening but can’t quite absorb where we are headed or what it all means.

Thus Ubiquitous. Quotidian. You can read more about my philosophy behind Ubiquitous. Quotidian.

That’s pretty much it for an introduction. One last thing to know. I don’t claim to know what I’m talking about in these posts. This is my place to sort things out aloud. Sometimes, my posts from day to day conflict with one another. I’m okay with that. To quote Whitman, “Do I contradict myself? Very well then, I contradict myself! I am large. I contain multitudes!”

I do appreciate comments and invite conversation. They keep my thinking honest, if not consistent.
